Rick Ash's Speedster

Rick Ash of Miami, Florida finished building this 1931 Model A speedster in the late spring of 2001. The 1928/29 Ford Roadster bodies seem to have been the preferred by the hot rod and speedster builders over the years but Rick wanted to do something different so he built one using a 1931 body.
The car features some very nice graphics that were done by Kerry Kruger. It was Rick's wife that suggested the name of "Widowmaker" for the car. The drivetrain is stock except for the 16" Ford wheels.
The Model A engine in Rick's car is bored .100" oversize. An SU1R Winfield grind cam, polished aluminum 7:1 Thomas head, Mallory dual point distributor, two Stromberg 81 carburetors and a split header from Red's Headers are the go-fast goodies on the engine.
In this rear 3/4 view we can see the two 1940 Ford hoods that Rick used to form the rear of the body. They have been nicely blended together. The sides of the body were fabricated to smoothly connect the rear of the car to the 1931 Ford cowl. The Ford badge at the rear of the body is a nice touch.
In this final picture we can see more of the shape attained by the 1940 Ford hoods. You can also see the dual exhuast pipes made possible by the split header. While this produces a different sound than a stock four-banger, it is very pleasing.
Rick said that he was inspired to build to his speedster by the pictures of speedsters he saw on this web site. I can think of no better reason for sharing my pictures than that. I'm glad I could be of help and congratulations Rick on a job well done. May you have many happy hours of enjoyment in your speedster.
