Hamilton, MTReed and Carol Olsen, of Victor, Montana showcased “Big Sky Country” weather and hospitality during the recently completed 20th Annual Northwest Vintage Speedster Clubs 200-mile endurance run August 31st through September 4th.  The event included a three-day spoke run for pre-1934 four cylinder speedsters and lowland tourers.  This huge affair was based in Hamilton, Montana at the Holiday Inn Express.  Visitors hailed from the “new” US State of Alberta, Nevada, Utah, California, Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Washington.  In a nutshell, the idea of a competitive event linked with leisurely driven tours of the surrounding area has a great deal of appeal and may signal the beginning of more events just like it.

Reed, a.k.a. “Rattler” as he is affectionately known, opened the event booklet with, “You’re in the Bitterroot Valley now, a geographical feature formed by two mountain ranges, the Sapphires on the east and the Bitterroots on the west.”  Both mountain ranges were the backdrop to the stage that was to become the “Bitterroot Loop-“T”-Loop Speedster Run” and two obstacles that would be crossed during the later three day spoke runs.  Carol a.k.a. “Friday” stopped making “nickels” long enough to work the registration desk and hostess a huge BBQ at their family home in Victor a few miles north of Hamilton for event attendees.  Both worked as a most excellent team rustling up help from family members, old car friends and coffee shop buddies in the area, a.k.a. “The Stuck in the Mud Gang” to man checkpoints and help with organizing the many details.  You knew whom the host team was by the sheriff stars on their shirts, or by the tall ten-gallon hats worn by some.  If’n ya had a question ask someone with a “star” on their shirt.

Saturday August 31st opened all the festivities with check-in, registration and a safety check.  Reed’s son Flint (that is his real name, not an a.k.a.) and wife Angie manned the photo shoot area and provided a couple of pictures of participants with their cars in front of the craggy Bitterroot Hidden and Ranger Peaks.
