The idea of a Memorial Day weekend speedster endurance run was born when Ed Jepperson retired. He had toyed with the idea for some time and now that he had a little leisure time available it seemed the obvious thing to do. Having discussed it with Bill Hills at some length, they both agreed that an additional run each year should be tried.
Where to have the speedster run was the next consideration. Having had a Memorial Day speedster run in Spokane several years earlier, it probably was not wise to have another in the Spokane area so soon. The first speedster run in Spokane was still fresh in too many minds, rain, snow, fog and wind. The obvious solution would be to contact Frank and Barbara Baker to ask if they would help chair the run in the Tri Cities area. Spring time in the Columbia Basin is beautiful.
The Bakers and Jeppersons felt the spring speedster run should have a different flavor than the fall speedster run. It should be more of a fun run, trying to keep costs down, with less frills. With the excellent help of Frank and Barbara the Wine Country speedster run was put into motion. The Tri Cities Model T Club members assisted with check points, timing, banquet & hospitality duties, trouble trucks and where ever else they might be needed.  The run was held at Cavanaughs in Kennewick, WA.
Saturday saw the speedsters inspected under a tarp attached to a motor home as it was very warm. A tour of some of the local wineries for wine tasting and purchasing followed the inspection. The hospitality room held an abundance of food, drink and visiting. Dinner that evening was on your own.
Sunday morning the starting flag dropped at 8:00 A.M. with 26 speedsters and 3 lowland cars leaving the starting line. The course was mapped through the countryside of wine vineyards, lush green everywhere you looked. Drivers were cautioned to be aware of farm vehicles along the way and to observe speed limits, especially in the small towns. A small box of Fruit Loops cereal was given to each car as they traveled along Fruit Loop Road. A contest was held to see which driver and navigator could find the most wineries. The weather was warm and only about three miles of dirt was available. Cherry Hill check point was challenging and did seem to be a problem for some navigators as cars were observed driving up and down irrigation canal banks and through fields to find the elusive check point.
The banquet Sunday evening was held at Cavanaughs with plenty of scrumptious food to enjoy. Jim & Betty Patterson were announced at the winners of the Wine Country speedster run with Rick Carnegie of Spokane as winner of the lowland tour.
Mary McConnell and R. J. Steed stepped forward to announce they would host the 2nd Memorial Day speedster run in Clackamas, Oregon. Thus, the annual Memorial Day speedster run evolved.
