The Name of the Game is "Don't Give Up ---- Keep Going"  Jan Hills

Bill & I, as most of you know, came home with the Winner's Trophy from the "Logging Country" 13th Annual 200 Mile Endurance Run, and no two people were more surprised than us! Usually we place way down the list and for us the fun has been just to finish, hitting all the check points and not getting into a royal battle over the map, for you see we seem to do a lot of site-seeing on roads that are not marked as part of the Run. This year was no exception, we were lost several times and had to backtrack. But, in the defense of us map readers, you drivers have to exercise more patience because as your saying, oh did you  see that - or isn't that beautiful - wouldn't you like to own that, and we start getting into enjoying the countryside these endurance runs hold, then you have the nerve to ask if the road we are on is on the run!!!
It's been our usual practice to quite often stop and offer our help if we see a car broke down on the run because it's really a good feeling if they finish the run too. Last year we took double pleasure in helping Gary & Di Hofer, for not only did we want them to finish the run, but since they had been challenged by Mary McConnell and R. J. Steed and these two ladies had never lost before, we sure wanted Gary & Di to give it their best shot. Well, guess what,Gary and Di did win and then Mary and R.J. (also now known as the lady loggers) challenged us.
We knew we were in trouble since the lady loggers always do well but took off with one thought only, we wanted to beat them and never even considered we might win overall. Within the first half hour or so, we had some electrical wiring problem but Bill managed to get us going again. However that breakdown cost us about twenty minutes. Proceeding on, we never saw anyone and found ourselves lost a few times (which migh7t e-xplain why we never saw anyone). Just prior to lunch and ending up at a gas station in Elma, we discovered along with several other endurance participants that we had taken the wrong road in. Now decision time -- some doubled back fearing they might have missed a check point, Bill & I decided to go on to lunch and if we found we had less than everyone else we would go back then, we just wanted to see if the lady loggers had beat us there. They came in while we were eating, they hurried out and Bill & I looked at each other, immediately got up and left too. The afternoon went a little better than the morning, we didn't seem to get lost and going past a gas station noticed the lady logger's green speedster, felt confident that we just might beat their challenge.
As we got a little closer to the Motel & the finish point we than began to discuss what we thought the finish time might be. I said about 3:45, Bill said 4:00. As we kept going, and time was moving on it became obvious we wouldn't get there at 3:45 (thank heaven) & Bill's guess of 4:00 was correct. Coming in 36 seconds early, points are doubled, giving us 72 total. Ironically, our car's number is 72. 1 feel we must dedicate our winning the run to Mary and R.J., for had they not challenged us we might have figured after breaking down and getting lost that we didn't stand a chance, but their cute little notes, etc., brought out our competitiveness and helped us win overall.
