Speedster Body Analysis 12/02

What is a Speedster ????  I thought it might be worth looking at all the 120 Speedsters and the 50 Classic photos on the NWVS website. These bodies are everything that we know about speedsters.  The samples are not scientific, but some things ring true.

Boat Tails are the most popular speedster body.  54% of the NWVS and 64% of the Classics.  There are also speedsters with no body aft of the seat, skiffs, chopped off tails, beetle backs, boxey (square cornered) speedsters and slope backs.

I only looked in detail at the Boat Tails since that is what I'm building. There is no "best", "most popular", or "agreed" shape for Boat Tails.   The design guidance is "Do What Pleases You".

Here are the big differences between the NWVS fleet and the set of Classic photos:

NWVS Boat Tails have : NWVS  Classics
More Wind Protection Windshields  89% 35%
Up-Swept Cowls 11% 32%
More Spoke Wheels Spoke Wheels 97% 76%
Solid Wheels 3% 24%
Less Fenders Fenders 5% 21%
No Fenders 95% 79%
Less Engine Cover Hoods and Side Panels 27% 68%
Hoods Only 68% 29%
Nothing 5% 3%
What Seems Consistent
Most Frames are Narrowed -- At least in the Rear
Most Speedsters are Lowered -- At least in the Front
Other Observations Less Single Seaters
Less Tops
Less Extreme Engines
Less Available After Market Bodies and Parts
No "Most Popular " Boat Tail Design
